Jacqueline du Pré (January 1945— October 1987) English cellist, known especially for the unsurpassed brilliance of her Elgar Concerto. She started playing at the age of four, having asked for a cello when she heard one played on the radio. At age 20 she recorded the Elgar Concerto for EMI, playing with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Her meteoric rise to fame had made her a public figure indeed, and her illness was not long kept secret. Newspapers didn't hesitate to comment about her suddenly inconsistent playing, her missed concerts, and her visits to doctors.
